.DISCUSSION...

As the Garnet Fire in the southern Sierra continues to rage, smoke aloft will impact portions of Mono and Mineral counties. Visibility reductions remain possible with a Dense Smoke Advisory out until 11 AM this morning. For air quality details, please visit fire.airnow.gov.

A low pressure system off the coast of northern California will push inland today and will stall over the area for the majority of the week. This will bring our first taste of fall-like weather with afternoon highs dropping into the mid 70s and 60s for the valleys and Sierra communities, respectively. Accompanying the cooler temperatures will be daily chances for showers and thunderstorms as well as breezy afternoon winds.

Showers today will primarily be isolated to the Basin and Range, and will initiate late afternoon (after 4pm), continuing overnight into the morning hours. CAM guidance has showers and thunderstorms firing Wednesday as early as noon, with daily chances again Thursday. Storms will primarily start along the Sierra and in NE CA. As of now, Wednesday looks to be the best day for widespread shower and storm coverage; chances drop Friday and even further Saturday.

Looking towards the weekend, brief ridging will allow high temperatures to push into the low 80s for W NV and the mid 70s for Sierra communities. As previously mentioned, shower chances also diminish. However, the reprieve will be brief as a shortwave trough off the coast of California marches inland overnight Saturday and into Sunday. Shower chances return Sunday with slightly cooler temperatures as well.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions expected for all terminals except KMMH today. Typical afternoon gusts up to 20-25 kts are expected today as well. Showers with the occasional lightning strike may impact Sierra terminals this afternoon (KTRK and KTVL), though confidence remains low.

KMMH will continue to likely see LIFR/IFR conditions, primarily due to smoke infiltrating from the Garnet Fire. As winds in the afternoon increase, conditions may raise to MVFR. Slantwise visibilities will continue to be impacted as the fire continues to produce smoke.
