.DISCUSSION...The slow-moving closed upper-level low pressure continue to shifts eastward over the Great Basin today. Generally dry weather today, except for some isolated to scattered showers and few thunderstorms again this afternoon and into early evening over the higher terrain across the eastern portion of the area. Temperatures are forecast to be very similar to Wednesday. Some enhanced west-northwest wind along the shore and channeled along the Eel river valley today, daytime winds will be mostly gentle and terrain driven.

Tonight into Friday, areas of fog and patchy dense fog are anticipated along the shelter valleys with clear skies and strong radiational cooling. Overnight temperatures are forecasted to be generally in the 50`s.

A shortwave ridge will begin to builds in downstream in the wake trough on Friday, promoting drier air mass and clearing skies. Inland highs are expected to start to warm on Friday, with highs forecasted to be in the upper 70`s to upper 80`s. Onshore flow will remain the coastal areas in the low to mid 60`s. Areas of valley fog are expected to develop again Friday night into Saturday.

Dry weather is expected for much of the day on Saturday and temperatures are expected to be 3 to 5 degrees warmer compared with Friday`s high temperatures forecast. The ridge aloft will shift eastward on Saturday, with an upstream H5 trough approaching the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. Cluster analysis are not in a good agreement with the positions of this trough. Models continue showing light precipitation on Sunday, primarily in Del Norte, Humboldt and portions of Trinity counties. There is the potential for some thunderstorms near the North Coast as well.

Monday, high pressure begin to build across the West Coast with 850 mb temperatures warming. This will bring a warming trend early next week, with interior valleys reaching or exceeding the 90`s degrees on Monday and continue warming up into the upper 90`s through mid next week across the warmer locations of Trinity, Lake, interior Mendocino, and interior Humboldt counties. /ZVS

.AVIATION...(6Z TAFs)...Stratus remained persistent at the coastal terminals for much of Wednesday, and is likely to remain overnight. IFR conditions are expected to continue, but brief drops to LIFR are possible. Interior valleys, including UKI, are observing MVFR ceilings, which also may continue through the night. Lifting and scattering of ceilings is expected after sunrise. Skies may clear for a few hours in the afternoon, but stratus is likely to return again in the evening. Winds generally remain light apart from afternoon breezes of 10 kts or less. JB

.MARINE...Northerly winds have returned as an area of low pressure moves out of the area. Winds will peak in the afternoon, with gusts of 20-25 kts possible in the other waters. Locally stronger gusts at or around 30 kts are possible around Cape Mendocino. Nearshore winds generally remain light. This pattern continues Friday, before winds ease Saturday as another system approaches the area. Northerlies return again Sunday into early next week. NBM is showing 50-80% probabilities for gale force gusts by Monday.

Seas are mostly characterized by building short period wind waves, which will be steep and hazardous to small crafts. Despite lighter winds, steep seas are forecast to propagate to the nearshore waters of Mendocino, especially Thursday night through Friday morning. A long period NW swell fills in Friday, which combined with the wind waves of 6-7 ft, results in combined seas of 7-10 ft by Friday night. Seas are forecast to ease Saturday into early Sunday as winds ease, but another mid-period NW swell of around 8 ft is forecast to fill in Sunday, keeping seas elevated. Along with building short period wind waves, combined seas may exceed 10 ft. JB

.BEACH HAZARD...A long period west-northwest swell will build late this afternoon/early evening with a significant swell heights around 3 to 4 feet at 16 to 17 seconds tonight. This energy swell has the potential to bring a moderate risk of sneaker waves , especially between 3 AM to 8 AM PDT on Friday. A beach hazard statement may be needed for the beaches north of Cape Mendocino. Stay tuned!. /ZVS
