Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Birmingham AL 1224 PM CDT Mon Sep 8 2025

...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, AVIATION...

.SHORT TERM... (This evening through Tuesday) Issued at 1202 PM CDT MON SEP 8 2025

Another pleasant day is unfolding across Central Alabama. As of writing, temps are sitting in the mid 70s to low 80s under mostly sunny skies. A swath of upper level clouds can be seen across our southeastern areas where there is a pocket of deeper moisture (evident on GOES TPW imagery). We tack on a couple of degrees tonight with lows in the upper 50s to mid 60s. Highs tomorrow climb back into the low to mid 80s.

The only other items of note in the short term is the potential for some breezy winds Tuesday morning. As surface high pressure slides south across the Carolinas, the pressure gradient begins to tighten. Easterly wind gusts from 20-25 MPH are likely, generally east of I-65. The gradient looks to relax by mid day.

.LONG TERM... (Tuesday night through next Sunday) Issued at 1202 PM CDT MON SEP 8 2025

No significant changes needed with this long term forecast update. Weak troughing aloft will give way to upper level ridging which will help keep us dry through the forecast period.

Previous long-term discussion: (Tuesday night through next Sunday) Issued at 1042 PM CDT SUN SEP 7 2025

Guidance continues to indicate a rain free pattern for the extended. ERN Conus ridging will remain the dominant feature through the week. In the upper levels, weak flow/troughing will be present across the Deep South for mid week, but with only very meager moisture available. As we head into the end of the week and next weekend, upper ridging spreads across the Central US from W TX with weak NRLY flow into AL and dry conditions. High temperatures slowly moderate upward through the extended. However, overnight lows should rebound nicely with the overall dry conditions.

.AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1202 PM CDT MON SEP 8 2025

We start out this TAF period with VFR conditions prevailing for most locations. Low level ceilings are hanging on at AUO but should lift over the next couple of hours. VFR then persists through the end of the TAF cycle. Easterly winds will become a bit breezy with gusts around 20 knots for the eastern terminals through the morning hours.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Rain free weather is forecast to prevail across Central Alabama for the upcoming week with surface ridging in place. Afternoon minimum RHs are currently forecast to average above critical thresholds. However, if dew points trend slightly lower mid to late week, RHs could bottom out just below currently forecast minimums in the lower 30s. 20 foot winds will be northeast to east between 5-10 mph Monday and Tuesday. 20 foot winds become lighter as the week progresses.
