Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 208 PM EDT Wed Sep 10 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure will aid in quiet and predominantly dry weather through the forecast period. A slight warming trend begins early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/... Broad area of low pressure offshore maintains northerly flow across the region. This reinforced wedge has kept cloud cover abundant throughout the day and temperatures have held in the mid 70s as a result. This evening, dry northwesterly flow should allow for some peeks of clear skies. This should keep the diurnal range limited with lows in the mid 60s. I have increased these lows from the previous forecast due to early and late cloud cover. NE winds return tonight and this should allow for clouds to develop near the inversion. Slow clearing should occur on Thursday with highs in the low 80s with some late-day peeks of sunshine.

&&

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... Continued dry this period with broad sfc high pressure nosing in from the north. Despite an upr-level trough pivoting through the area, mid and upper levels remain quite dry, so anticipating mainly mostly sunny/clear skies, partly cloudy near the coast Thursday night. Temps will be slightly below normal for mid September...lows both nights in the upr 50s to mid 60s, and highs Friday in the low/mid 80s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Not much change in the pattern for the long term period with the region still under the influence of sfc high pressure. Aforementioned upr-level trough pushes off the coast leaving continued northerly dry flow aloft in its wake. Moisture will be limited to below 800-700 mb, but even that will be meager, and with the lack of apparent forcing mechanisms, a dry forecast remains for the entire period. Temps start to moderate early next week, with highs returning to around 90 degrees western areas Monday and staying in the mid/upr 80s there through midweek. Low/mid 80s near the coast.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Northerly flow and reinforced MVFR should continue this afternoon. Coastal sites are battling with low level mixing near the warmer ocean waters. This does indicate that the cloud deck is thin, so some clearing should occur tonight as the depth of the inversion is interrupted. Northerly flow becomes more NE this evening and will introduce some low level moisture with a strengthening inversion. Expect IFR for NC terminals and MVFR elsewhere to start the day on Thursday. Without strong northerly flow, VFR should gradually develop during the afternoon.

Extended Outlook... VFR. The next chance of rain and possible flight restrictions will be Saturday into Sunday ahead of a mostly dry cold front.

&&

.MARINE... Through Thursday... Broad low pressure will continue to lift north and east tonight. High pressure over the Carolinas will weaken tonight as winds hover around 10-15 knots. NE winds become re- established late tonight into Thursday. After the initial surge of NE winds (15-20 knots), winds will settle to around 15 knots for Thursday. Seas 2-4 feet.

Thursday night through Monday... No headlines anticipated attm. Do expect NE sustained winds of 15-20 kt and seas up to 5 ft Friday through Saturday as the sfc pressure gradient tightens with low pressure offshore and high pressure expanding in from the north. Improving marine conditions thereafter for Sunday and Monday as both the offshore low pressure and inland high pressure weaken.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... The full moon and elevated north to northeast winds will keep tides higher than normal into the late week period. Minor coastal flooding expected for the immediate coasts of southeast NC and northeast SC, including the back bays and sounds and along the Intra- coastal Waterway, will reside with the morning high tide cycles going into the upcoming weekend. Locations along the banks of the lower Cape Fear River from Wilmington southward can expect minor coastal flooding with each high tide cycle through Thursday then mainly the midday high tide cycle Friday into this weekend.

&&

.ILM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... NC...Coastal Flood Advisory from 11 AM to 3 PM EDT Thursday for NCZ107. SC...None. MARINE...None.
