.KEY MESSAGES...

- Cooler and unsettled weather returning to the region next week with increasing threat for showers and afternoon thunderstorms.

- Improving air quality expected with pattern change.

&&

.SYNOPSIS... Smoke and haze is expected into early next week though we have seen some improvement in areas. The threat for showers and thunderstorms will be in the mountains today then become more widespread next week. Temperatures will be cooling into the 70s by next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION... Tonight: A shortwave trough is currently pushing across the Inland Northwest. It is producing isolated thunderstorms and showers along the Canadian Border and Lower ID Panhandle. The thunderstorms have a chance of producing gusty winds, small hail, brief heavy rain, and lightning. The gusty wind speeds will range between 25-30 mph. As the evening settles in over the region, the activity will diminish with a stabilizing environment. Overnight lows are expected to be in the 50s and low 60s.

Monday through Thursday: Models continue to keep the upper-low parked over the Northwest through much of the week. Temperatures will be trending cooler with increased humidity. Just about every day from Monday through Wednesday carries some degree of precipitation chances. Currently, the highest probabilities for wetting rains arrives Monday night into Tuesday when the strongest dynamics lift into the area delivering a 40-60% chance for a tenth or more. Precip amounts range from a tenth or two for the lowlands and a quarter to 3 quarters of an inch for the higher terrains. The thunderstorm threat has weakened from previous runs but will still need to keep an eye on it. Highs will be in the 70s. Lows will be in the 50s.

The low will fill and begin to drift out the region Friday as another low approaches the coast. A ridge will build in between the two lows. It will start a drying trend for the region and into the weekend. With less sun time, temperatures are expected to remain mild and near season normals. Highs will be in the 70s and lows will be in the 50s. /JDC
